The Bruner Avenue Children's Facility is a prototype of a new dwelling type funded by the New York State Office of Mental Health and operated by a not-for-profit social service agency, The Jewish Board for Children and Family Services. Eight children aged 14-17 years will receive 24-hour acute care for mental and emotional special needs in a family-like setting. The design exposes the interlock of public and private spaces through the use of different exterior materials. The masonry components reflect the need for privacy while the framed sections allow larger openings for more transparency (photos © Michael Moran).
