The project doubled the size of LREI’s high school on one of the most complex urban sites in the city: a historically designated block in Greenwich Village that required Landmarks Preservation Commission approval and creative solutions to the constraints of the existing building and its surrounding context.
ABA Studio’s design transformed what had been an inward-focused block building into an outward-facing campus, which is a concept that reorganized the school around subtractive courtyards and vibrant exterior gathering spaces, promoting community and connection where isolation had previously prevailed.
The completed expansion includes:
• 5-story Arts Pavilion — new construction providing dedicated studio, performance, and visual arts facilities
• Theater Renovation — updated performance infrastructure supporting LREI’s arts programming
• 3-story Science Pavilion — new dedicated science facilities meeting contemporary laboratory standards
