The Washington Market School project consists of a 3,000SF expansion and renovation of an existing preschool in a TriBeCa storefront space. The primary design element is a 24" thick brick wall, cut and folded to pull the existing school into the expansion space. The renovated mezzanine serves as the visual bridge over the existing and new areas. The design prioritizes visual connections between the spaces on the first floor and the mezzanine to foster a community-based learning environment and allows for discrete classroom observation by teachers, specialists, and parents.
