Andrew Bartle, as a partner in Architrope, was the principal designer for this public building. This project was a joint venture with James Harb Architects for the NYC Department of General Services in 1995-99. The two-story, checkerboard-patterned Hollis Avenue Child Care Center is a playful building that provides a much-needed range of preschool, after-school, and summer programs for 115 neighborhood children. Children may enter the building through a small “sentry-box” pavilion, and each classroom has its own distinct and sun-filled identity.
